Credit unions in North Carolina

Credit union: In North Carolina, there are 69 headquartered credit unions that operate more than 850 active branches for their members. Over 4.4 million North Carolinians use credit unions for their banking needs. That is close to half of the population of the state. With the footprint the traditional banking industry has in North Carolina, that is a remarkable number. The largest credit union in the state is State Employees Credit Union, which has more than 2.4 million members. Over half of the state’s credit union members belong to the same cooperative. 

Like credit unions in all other states, you must meet the membership requirements of the cooperative. There are cooperatives for those who work at specific companies or universities, as well as cooperatives for particular professions. Several are community-based and serve some of the state’s more rural counties. 

Car insurance: Surveys from national insurance carriers show that North Carolina drivers pay some of the lowest premiums in the country. Premiums are estimated to be 41% below the national average. Just because you pay a low premium, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be on the lookout for a lower one. It is always wise to save money! 

It does not appear that North Carolina credit unions underwrite their own auto insurance policies. However, many work with TruStage to provide discounts to their members.
